VERSAR, Inc. Selected for Over $1 Million in Water Vulnerability Assessments

Signs Strategic Partnership Agreement With Leading Water Services Firm

SPRINGFIELD, Va., April 23 / VERSAR, Inc. (Amex: VSR - news) announced today that the Company has been selected for a total of over $1 million in vulnerability assessments involving water utilities and military installations. To increase penetration of the marketplace, VERSAR has signed an agreement with a leading water services firm, Brown and Caldwell, headquartered in Walnut Creek, California, http://www.brownandcaldwell.com , to provide a full range of utility vulnerability assessments, facilities design and implementation of security upgrades. The Versar/Brown and Caldwell team conducts vulnerability and security assessments, develop mitigation measures and emergency operation plans. Projects include facility assessments in San Jose, CA, two Large Southeast cities and the Air force Academy.

VERSAR also has been selected to participate in a key vulnerability assessment training program sponsored by Sandia National Laboratories and the American Water Works Association Research Foundation and funded by the Environmental Protection Agency. A four-member team will become certified in the Risk Assessment Methodology for Water Utilities. The Versar/Brown and Caldwell team will be trained at Sandia National Laboratories in Albuquerque, N.M. After training is completed in May, the team will be certified to train consultants, water utilities and government/tribal entities to conduct their own facility vulnerability assessments.

Selection for the training sessions comes on the heels of the supplemental appropriations Congress approved for the EPA to help support anti-terrorism activities at drinking water and wastewater utilities. The EPA is soliciting grant applications from large (communities of more than 100,000) publicly owned systems; awardees will receive up to $115,000 to develop vulnerability assessments, emergency response/operating plans, security enhancement plans and designs or some combination of these efforts.

Dr. Theodore Prociv, President and CEO of VERSAR, said, ``While the overall market for homeland security is still developing, many firms are entering this market with high expectations. VERSAR has focused its already strong qualifications and experience on the long-term market development for homeland security to prepare for or respond to terrorist events and has organized an experienced, senior team to pursue this business area. We are on track for implementing our strategic vision of a full service homeland security practice involving consulting, engineering, chemical and biological services and emergency response. The development of the vulnerability assessment marketplace, our selection as a training firm by Sandia/AWWA, and our relationship with Brown and Caldwell are a firm foundation for continued growth in this sector, and we expect to have more significant announcements later in the fourth quarter.''
